✎ Carl Jung and the Archetypes

Being a psychology student is great considering the fact that we are learning about human behavior and their personality which is so complex to begin with. I love those moments when I am in one of my psychology related subjects. So yesterday, we had a reporting about Carl Jung’s (pronounced as young) theory. As usual, I wasn’t paying attention to the first half of the report. Classes at one p.m bore me silly (and sleepy) and the reporter was discussing Jung’s biography first. Her next topic was what aroused my consciousness. She was discussing something about the types of archetypes which were kind of interesting. If I remembered correctly, there were 8 of them. Namely the PERSONA, SHADOW, ANIMA, ANIMUS, WISE OLD MAN, GREAT MOTHER, HERO and SELF. I was pondering afterwards whether my persona is contradicting to my shadow since according to Jung both are quite opposite. I would say that I’m pretty open and stuff and whether I like it or not, I tend to be quite tactless and insensitive (or maybe that was already my shadow who was able to sneak out from the self’s guarding). On the other hand, maybe my ego still haven’t accepted the truth that my shadow is pretty dark and I would say immoral (???). LOL Anyway, my classmate mentioned that Jung is pretty sexist and I don’t even know the reason why. I mean, Jung did mention that there is quite a big difference between men and women in terms of physical aspect but then again he did formulate the archetypes and one of this is the anima. If he really is a sexist then why did he stated that women tend to express their anima or masculine side? Actually, I do think that it is a universal fact and truth that men are stronger than women that is when we speak of physical aspect. However, not all the time since now women have already established this status wherein they believe that what can man do, women can do better. I’m not saying that I’m dependent on men. As matter of fact, there are a lot of things that I can do that my brother can’t. It’s just that there will always be those moments when we have to give let our guards down and let the men do the works. Going back to the archetypes, my mother is a great example of an “excess” of a great mother and hero especially the hero. She really has this attitude that it’s okay that there’s nothing much left for her as long as she was able to help. Before, I admired her for this but I guess this kind of thing has its own limitations as well especially if the one being sacrificed is your family’s peace and welfare. I think that a little selfishness is sometimes good. Now my mother is learning to keep some for herself which she really does deserve. I guess that’s all for this day since we have not finished the whole chapter. I’m pretty excited about the rest of the content.
