Our teacher in personality has given us the activity of doing a case analysis of a celebrity.

Johnny Depp suddenly popped in my mind. Not only because he is one of my favorite actors but because I would really like to know what kind of personality he has and why he tends to act in roles that are quite uncanny and weird.

So here's my analysis about him and his biography that I copied from biography.com:

Case Analysis:
Johnny Depp’s personality is evident in the Adlerian theory. At the early stages of Depp’s life, I noticed that there is a feeling of inferiority. What I really find odd is that Depp was the youngest of the brood and yet it seems that he contradicts Adler’s concept of birth order traits. As a matter of fact, because of his somewhat destructive nature, he seems to manifest the traits that are present in the eldest.
Moving on, Adler’s theory stated first that the one dynamic force of behind people’s behavior is the striving for success or superiority. Although Depp didn’t aim for superiority but he did use success as his driving force. His attitude towards his early appearance as a front man for his band, The Kid, seems to mark his much-admired bad boy image. During his life of the music business, people became attracted to his boyish charms with a touch of rebellious air. Because of this Johnny Depp was instantly being seen as a potential actor.
Adler also stated that personality is unified and self-consistent. This is also found in Johnny Depp. As the years have past by and customs and traditions have changed in Hollywood, Depp remained unaffected by the adjustments and maintained with his image.
It is also stated that the value of all human activity must seen from the viewpoint of the social interest. This made me think about that the reason why Depp have taken and concentrated on roles that carved a niche for him as a serious, somewhat dark, idiosyncratic performer, roles that surprise critics and audiences alike. I think because of these notable roles that Depp has become the most respected and versatile actor in Hollywood and therefore has captured the audiences attention and interest.
However, not only Adler’s theory have I put into consideration in regards to Depp’s behavior. I also find that some of his traits are present in Fromm’s.
I would say that his sense of identity is strong and therefore he is strongly aware that he is a separate entity. Depp did mention that ever since he was a kid he had this notion that he was different than any other kid though he stated that he was withdrawn and an odd-ball which is later shown for his consistent selection of uncanny roles.
Depp also manifest Fromm’s character orientation which is the productive work which he used as solved his basic human dilemma and uniting with the world and others while retaining uniqueness and individuality. He uses work not as an end in itself but as a means of creative self-expression.
Lastly, I would also like to add that Depp also has a tendency to be slightly necrophiliac and fixated for his consistent choice of weird, dark and uncanny roles.
